At Farmstead Provisions, we specialize in breeding exceptional poultry known for producing richly colored eggs. From deep chocolate browns and vibrant olive greens to beautifully speckled eggs with natural heavy blooms. As an NPIP-certified farm, we are committed to healthy, high quality breeding stock and proudly ship hatching eggs and chicks nationwide.
Breeder’s Selection
This line is bred for dark colors, heavy blooms, and speckles.
Black Copper Marans are prized for their deep, chocolate brown eggs, often with natural speckling and a rich, glossy finish. You will receive a variety of colors from dark to bloom to speckled based on what’s available on your shipping day. We DO send our darkest eggs, always. One of our roosters carries a heavy bloom trait, so you’re guaranteed a chance to having a heavy bloom layer. By purchasing these, you agree that you’ll receive a variation of color. We do not have the darkest color out there, but always try our best to improve our lines.
We strive to breed for SOP in all of our birds to the best of our ability. Marans eggs naturally fade. We try our best to get you the darkest eggs. Black Copper Marans “run out of ink” as they get deeper into the laying season, but they still have the dark laying gene and pass that on to the next generation. Our hens lay in the range of 6-9 on the Marans scale during prime season. They naturally fade as it gets later in the season.
Known for their cold hardiness, Marans do well in cooler climates and maintain a steady laying rate through the seasons. Our line does like to take a break in the warm weather and cooler weather.
Mating and genetics: Our flock is bred to purple bloom rooster from Opry Hill and a rooster from Little Chicken Farms dark line - Belatrix’s daughter. If you know, you know. Belatrix is LCF darkest laying bird, consistently giving 9’s.
Lines and pattern: Our birds originate from lines selected for heavy blooms and dark eggs. Expect chicks to develop into layers that produce a range of browns on the scale.
Conformation and color: Roosters have correct combs, tails and coloring. Some of our girls are over-melanized as we see in correlation with darker laying Marans lines.
Egg size: These are a large fowl breed laying eggs consistently over 62g.
Biosecurity and handling: We are continually working to align our procedures with standard operating practices to ensure the healthiest stock and clean hatching eggs. If you have specific questions about genetics, shipping, or availability, please let us know.
📦 Return & Refund Policy – Hatching Eggs
Due to the nature of hatching eggs, all sales are final. We do not accept returns or offer refunds once your order has been shipped, or after 24 hours from purchase. If you do need to cancel your order within 24 hours of purchase, you’ll be issued a store credit for future use. We guarantee that all eggs are fresh and fertile at the time of shipping. We do not replace or refund broken eggs, please file a claim with USPS. Please remember that just because an egg did not develop during incubation, DOES NOT MEAN it was not fertile. So many factors can play a role in hatch rate and development.
Fertility is regularly monitored from each breeding pen to ensure roosters are actively doing their job. That said, once eggs are handed off to USPS, we are no longer responsible for their handling, delays, or damage. Standard shipping is via USPS Priority Mail (1–3 days) and includes $100 of insurance (shipping fees are not covered under this insurance).
If your package arrives damaged, please:
Take clear photos of the box, packaging, and any broken eggs
Inspect your package immediately upon pickup
File a damage claim with USPS online (damage only, not shipping delays)
Send us pictures and video evidence within 24 hours of arrival
Please remember: Hatching eggs are always a gamble. We cannot guarantee hatch rates or how USPS handles the eggs during transit.
If we are unable to fulfill your order for any reason on our end, you will receive a refund. For any concerns, feel free to contact us via email or Facebook.

This is for 6 hatching eggs. If you order more than 6, they will be shipped at different times and you will need to pay an additional shipping fee. Why only 6? My flock isn’t big enough to be able to send a dozen at a time currently. This will change in Fall 2026.
Our Crele Penedesenca are highly regarded for their striking crele plumage and their signature dark brown eggs, often finished with a smooth sheen and occasional natural bloom making them appear mauve or dusty pink. Our line is bred for egg color and one of our girls produces eggs as dark as a marans. Our rooster has the correct carnation comb. These birds are not SOP as they are bred for egg color. They are sexable at hatch, boys will hatch lighter and girls will hatch with a pronounced chipmunk pattern and heavy eyeliner. This is a PROJECT PEN and there will be faults in your birds that do not line up with perfect SOP.
The biggest fault in our line is coloring of the birds. We breed for egg color, and hope our correct rooster helps offspring. Our birds do produce the carnation comb.
Crele Penedesenca are known for their hardiness, active foraging ability, and strong resilience in cooler climates. They are dependable layers throughout much of the year, though like many heritage breeds, they may naturally slow production during periods of extreme heat or shorter winter daylight hours.

Curious what happens when you mix some of the boldest layers in the barnyard? Flock Around and Find Out is our no-rules, full-throttle dozen for adventurous hatchers who love surprises and stunning egg baskets. This mixed dozen includes hatching eggs from our most colorful and productive layers, with genetics pulled from a powerhouse blend of premium breeds.
Expect eggs from a rotation of:
Black Copper Marans – known for their deep chocolate brown shells
Multigenerational Olive Eggers – producing rich green hues and unexpected bloom patterns
Silverudd Blues (formerly Isbars) – famous for their unique mossy green eggs
Heavy Bloom Olive layers – for chalky, porcelain finishes with flare
Welsummer – loaded with speckles, earthy reds, and terra cotta tones
Crele Penedesenca — dark chocolate matte finished eggs
Ameruacana - these are crossed with a BCM giving a F1 olive egger
These are not purebred lines, the only guaranteed purebred will be the heavy bloom marans —they’re intentionally mixed to maximize color diversity, bloom coverage, speckling, and overall beauty. Every egg is a surprise, and every chick is a unique creation you won’t find in a hatchery catalog. This whole line is covered by a heavy bloom black copper marans rooster. If we have extra eggs from our Crele Penedesenca pen, they’ll be labeled.
Eggs will be labeled what offspring will be:
F1 - First generation Olive Egger
BC1 to BC 3- Backcross olive egger
HB - Heavy Bloom Marans
CP - Crele Penedesenca
BCM - Black Copper Marans
FAFO - I really have no clue, but it’s pretty so have at it.
Whether you’re expanding your rainbow flock, chasing rare egg colors, or just love a little chaos in the incubator, this dozen is your golden ticket.
HEAVY BLOOM UNDERSTANDING: These eggs are from Marans that carry a heavy bloom gene. Not every egg will express a heavy bloom. We only kept girls who have shown blooms, but about 1 in every 3 egg shows a bloom depending on season. The bloom is NOT guaranteed to be passed down. We do breed for it, and there is a high chance.
Warning: Hatching may result in extreme excitement, obsessive color sorting, and a sudden need for more nesting boxes.
